I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, does not receive us. Therefore, if I come, I will call to mind his deeds which he does, prating against us with malicious words. And not content with that, he himself does not receive the brethren, and forbids those who wish to, putting them out of the church. Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God. Demetrius has a good testimony from all, and from the truth itself. And we also bear witness, and you know that our testimony is true. —3 John 1:9-12 – NKJV
Father, help me to see that I often overcomplicate the life of faith. Let me refuse to imitate evil, but instead be constantly seeking conformity with good. May these two ancient men serve as examples to me. Help my spirit to refuse the heart of a Diotrephes- always seeking to be first and to control the lives and ministries of others. Give me instead a life like Demetrius as I seek to be faithful in serving and building a reputation as a good and gracious servant of Christ. Lord, help me to realize how easy it can be to become deceived by power and self-seeking. Grant me a discerning heart to know my motivations and in all ways to be conformed to Jesus. In His name, amen.
There will always be tensions in serving in a local church. Some may seek to dominate while others with great gifts are underutilized or disregarded. How can I use my gifts to serve the Lord while still cultivating a humble, teachable spirit this week?

Great picture and this line of your prayer touched me this morning.
“Grant me a discerning heart to know my motivations and in all ways to be conformed”
I need a discerning heart today as I begin to take weekly walks with an unbelieving friend (at her request)
This is the opening I have been praying for!
